Cosmetic Dermatology Q & A

How does Botox work?

Botox and Dysport are cosmetic injectables called neuromodulators. They’re derived from botulinum toxin, a toxin that temporarily freezes the muscles where it’s injected to smooth wrinkles and prevent them from coming back for up to four months.

The most popular treatment areas for Botox and Dysport are lines between your eyebrows, forehead lines, and crow’s feet.

The injections are usually painless and take just a few minutes at the Kentucky Skin Cancer Center.  Botox or Dysport can help you look younger and less tired, which is why neuromodulators are the most popular noninvasive cosmetic treatment in the United States today.

Botox and Dysport work on dynamic wrinkles, the ones that come from repeated muscle movement. Wrinkles that occur because of age-related facial volume depletion require another solution like dermal fillers or microneedling.

How do dermal fillers work?

Juvéderm and Restylane are dermal fillers made mainly from hyaluronic acid, a duplicate of a complex sugar that your body contains naturally.

As you age, your hyaluronic acid levels decrease, which triggers collagen depletion, too. This leaves you with less facial volume and can cause smile lines, thin cheeks, and lip thinning.

Dermal fillers restore the volume you’ve lost and can also shape your face. Dr. Skaggs can fill in smile lines, thin cheeks, sagging lines at the corners of your lips, and other wrinkles and lines that come from volume loss. He can also volumize your lips, enhance your cheekbones, or otherwise enhance your face to meet your goals.

Dermal fillers generally last around 6-24 months, depending on the type of filler and where it is injected. Usually, dermal fillers last the longest in the cheeks and shortest in the lips.

How does microneedling work?

Like dermal fillers, microneedling is a solution for age-related facial volume depletion. However, with microneedling, the solution comes from within your body. Dr. Skaggs uses the Collagen P.I.N. device, which has a cluster of tiny needles, to create many micro-injuries in your skin. These micro-injuries stimulate your body to produce new collagen and elastin to support and smooth your skin.

It takes up to a few months to make new collagen and elastin, but the end result is improved volume, just where you need it. To learn more about the cosmetic dermatology options and schedule an appointment, call the office nearest you today.
